Several of the reds are almost indistinguishable from one another, not having enough difference in undertone and depth to tell them apart. When applied fully, wax-based pencils can produce an almost “buttery” surface that is conducive for blending, layering, and mixing. Build up to a heavy application – Colored pencils, when used to their full potential, can resemble paintings.

I always say that the paper a colored pencil artist uses is vitally important and I maintain that if a colored pencil performs well on a ultra smooth surface, it speaks volumes to the quality of the core. A colored pencil is essentially a wooden barrel filled with binder and pigment, along with fillers and clay. For accessibility and to locate a particular colour, I prefer the tin box, especially when you have 48 pencils. As an artist, I’ve had my fair share of bad colored pencils that keep breaking or don’t blend and layer well. Since the binders are different in wax-based and oil-based colored pencils, the most effective burnishing techniques also differ. I did try the pencil on a few different papers, as you can see in the image below, the pigments are quite opaque on this black paper, the white however is not quite as opaque as the other pigments and I found this to be the case on the art work I have provided.

According to a fairly reliable source the binder in water color pencils – and water color in general – is not water but gum arabic. Finally, although there is less color applied per pass that means that the pencils can have a much longer life so you get more bang for your buck. When I spoke to the second chemist from the second company, it was approximately six or eight months later and as I mentioned, after talking to the first person, I never expected to discuss matters with a second, but obviously when the chance was presented to me, I absolutely jumped at the chance. Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH). They’re more affordable compared to Faber-Castell’s Polychromos or Derwent’s Lightfast colored pencils which we’ll talk about a bit later.

Notably, these pencils do not suffer from wax bloom, a common issue with conventional wax-colored pencil sets. However, due to the amount of pigment in the Lightfast range, the chroma is far richer and the colours will appear deeper than other colours with the same names in the other Derwent ranges. Due to the cheapness and the fact that there are more brand options available, wax pencils are slightly more accessible for beginners. The best colours for beginners are probably the Crayola ones (not reviewed here as we are looking at the “best” from a professional artist’s point of view). Following extensive testing, we can confirm that all 100 colours in the Lightfast range are 100% lightfast, meaning they are lightfast for up to 100 years (under museum conditions). These are interesting in that they are a wax and oil hybrid pencil so while they aren’t exclusively oil we felt the need to mention them at least. Before I start reviewing let me first state that I am NOT an artist, I have no art training, not even an art GCSE and only started using coloured pencils again 2 months ago. Instead, they exhibit characteristics of both wax-based and oil-based colored pencils, offering a unique blend of the two. They are not the cheapest as you would expect for the quality they offer, but they are worth the extra cost (smaller tins are available too if the extra cost if the full set is an issue, always better to get quality over quantity). White or Cream Colored Pencil – A lighter pencil is used to work colors already applied to the surface working the medium into the tooth of the paper. However, the good thing is that they are available in both the US and UK, much more than the Markers. Everyone’s needs are different so I’ve also included a few budget-friendly ones and ones that are great for gifts. Blick wrote back saying these are just a different kind of pencil and not creamy like an oil pastel, and definitely is not oil paint needing to dry; so at least ruled the latter part out now. While oil-based colored pencils tend to be more expensive, there are also premium wax-based pencils like the Caran D’ache Luminance colored pencils.
