I left the London College of Fashion in the summer of 1985 and started working there on my 23rd birthday. I have never found them comfortable and I thought (excuse my French) ‘fuck it’ I want to be comfortable and be able to dance without having to take my shoes off, or feeling like my feel were going to fall off after 10 minutes! Marc Jacobs does it – his high-end strapless dresses include a corselet foundation and waist stay, for example. Next I stay-stitched all the neck edges on the machine 5mm in, if you have a very loose weave fabric it would probably be sensible to stay-stitch the bottom edge of the front bodice piece to prevent stretching. If you’ve been reading my blogs for a while you’ll know that as well as meeting up for sewcials with fellow sewers I really enjoy my visits to exhibitions and galleries.

Who knew there was a link between doing a creative activity and a more balanced sense of well-being? Actress Stephanie Beacham wearing a gown similar to the Carmen Miranda in a women’s magazine another version of the dress in an ad for a car (? I hemmed the lining and sequins together at the hem and on the sleeves as the sequins were quite scratchy and the rayon was a lot more drapey and I feared tripping over the lining inside my dress, so I hemmed them together. But I honestly think it can sound a bit pretentious to describe things as couture, (if you're not speaking in french already! In general, I think that these books use “couture” to suggest that the techniques are more in depth/time consuming and yield better results that what the Big 4 would generally instruct you to do in their pattern instructions.

Judith and Sandy do an absolutely awe-inspiring job of running the account for us, along with fantastic guest editors to keep us all coming back time after time-thank you thank you THANK YOU!This is a couture technique so if you look at red carpet dresses with no visible stitching at the hem this will be how they achieved it. I’ve added links throughout so you should be able to see and read for yourselves what the guest editors had to say. I love the act of making clothes, the planning, the cutting out, the sewing, because that was taking my mind off what was happening in the real world but how could I justify making new clothes that I had little use for? I had the leather (or more accurately faux leather) already in my stash as I bought it a while ago from Girl Charlee to make a leather jacket. I like Roberta Carr's definition… Without quoting her precisely, she talks about couture as a way of thinking… It's a holistic method of approaching a garment from fit to finish, encompassing consideration of the fabric and technique to create a harmonious whole.
