I loved the way that everything slowly unraveled as Marin unfurled the mysteries of the Lovelace family. If you are the publisher or author and feel that they do not properly reflect the range of media opinion now available, send us a message with the mainstream reviews that you would like to see added. All the Dead Lie Down follows the story of Marin who becomes the nanny to her mother's former childhood friend/famous horror novelist. Alice invited Marin on as Wren and Thea’s nanny since she and Marin’s mother, Cordelia, were childhood best friends.

This book definitely enjoys a Gothic Horror leaning aesthetic, and the bones and the sprawling estate fit with greenhouse and ancient cemetery really make this setting feel real and get your ready for the story being told. Lovelace House and its creepy, charming inhabitants felt utterly real to me, and I held my breath through every step Marin took into their darkness.By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. Tidligere kriminalreport er Molly Cates skriver nu om hjemløse kvinder, men undersøger sam tidig sin fars formodede selvmord 25 år tidligere. McCauley does a great job describing the scenes and making the reader have a sense of overall dread in a good way. I’m going through the shelf of mysteries by women that I brought when I moved into this house 20 years ago, rereading, and deciding whether to keep any.

This gothic story merges horror and a lovely queer romance with a helping of the fantastical in what is ultimately a story about grieving, secrets, and belonging. The girls’ strange behavior starts almost immediately, escalating from harmless pranks to (almost) attempted murder. There’s something about imagining a child with an American accent that doesn’t make them unsettling at all, but give them a posh British accent? It creates a close, tense setting that ramps up the tension and adds a sense of claustrophobia that I absolutely love. The youngest, Thea, (an affectionate little girl) has the odd habit of burying her dolls in the nearby woods; the oldest, Wren, plots horrible pranks aimed to get rid of their new nanny; Alice is an absent and distracted parent; only the cook/housekeeper Neera has a kind word for Marin. Both girls have lost so much, both are at sea in grief, both have secrets (some bigger than others), and both want to belong to someone. I’m currently revising my next book, another YA with horror elements about a group of girls stranded on an island in the Pacific Northwest with a monster. In the case of All the Dead Lie Down, the romance between Marin and Evie was realistic, emotional and full of sapphic longing.

At times though you think that Evie and Marin could be a bit older, but you realize they are older in a way because of everything they have gone through. She takes Thea and Wren on (dealing with awful pranks) but realizes that something seems off with Alice. While, at times, I felt the story was getting too similar to Bly Manor, I can happily say the uniqueness of this story shines through.

I was trying to figure out what was going on with the two young kids and was expecting at any moment they would turn into demon children. Battling the hazing that comes with caring for children she finds that some of the pranks are too frightening to be conjured by children and with the arrival of the eldest Lovelace, Marin uncovers more than just a few skeletons in the closet. Vivian, Beck, and Cassie's grief, rage, tenacity and vengeance give us the strength to fight back against the gun violence and violence against women that we as society have come to see as unstoppable and inevitable. I mean, come on: a young girl riddled with constant dread and anxiety, always anticipating the worst-case scenarios, finding an odd comfort in horror stories, and slowly discovering that she's sapphic as hell? The house is inhabited by famous horror novelist Alice Lovelace, her three daughters (Evie, Wren, and Thea Hallowell), and their caretaker, Neera.
